On July 18, 2024, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a statement emphasizing the importance of fostering innovation as a foundation for Europe’s future competitiveness. She identified digitalization, artificial intelligence (AI), and green technologies as critical areas where Europe must take a leadership role to drive economic growth and secure its place in the global economy. Von der Leyen’s vision reflects a strategic commitment to not only advancing technological capabilities but also ensuring that Europe remains at the forefront of sustainable and intelligent development.

This vision aligns closely with the mission of the Women’s Brain Foundation, which advocates for gender-sensitive research and innovation in neuroscience and beyond. The emphasis on digitalization and AI presents a significant opportunity to address existing disparities, particularly in how these technologies are developed and applied. By integrating diverse perspectives, including those of women and other underserved groups, Europe can foster innovation that is not only cutting-edge but also inclusive and equitable.

The Women’s Brain Foundation is eager to see how these initiatives unfold and is committed to supporting efforts that advance gender-sensitive research and innovation, ensuring that the future Europe envisions is one where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Recent statements from other political leaders and developments in the field of AI and healthcare align with the vision expressed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding innovation as a cornerstone for competitiveness. For instance, in the United States, President Joe Biden has highlighted the importance of regulatory frameworks for AI, emphasizing that responsible governance and transparency are crucial for the safe deployment of AI technologies, particularly in healthcare. This includes measures to address bias, protect privacy, and ensure that AI applications, such as those used in healthcare, are trustworthy and equitable.

Overall, the global push towards innovation in AI, particularly within the healthcare sector, offers significant opportunities to enhance care and improve outcomes. However, it is vital that these advancements are pursued with a focus on equity, transparency, and ethical considerations to ensure that all populations, including women, can fully benefit from the technological revolution.
