Women's Health in the Spotlight

Autoimmune diseases impact women at vastly higher rates than men.  Of the approximately
4% of the global population affected by one of more than 80 different autoimmune diseases, women make up around 80%.  The exact reason for this difference is not clear, and over the years many explanations have been put forward, such as the X chromosome, the microbiome, sex hormones, environmental factors, and microchimerism (the presence of a small number of cells from one individual within the tissues of another genetically distinct individual).
