ZURICH, Switzerland, December 14th, 2020 — Dr. Antonella Santuccione Chadha, co-founder and CEO of the Women’s Brain Project (WBP), and Head of Stakeholder Engagement at Biogen, has been awarded the Italian national prize Medicina Italia for lending her expertise to tackling the COVID-19 crisis in her home region Abruzzo and for her work in sex and gender-oriented precision medicine that has contributed to address the health emergency.

The achievement recognizes Santuccione Chadha great support to her community by advising the Abruzzo Government in establishing a COVID-19 hospital in the early stage of the pandemic that has contributed to save lives. The only dedicated COVID-19 hospital in the Abruzzo region has been inaugurated in April in the city of Pescara and has been a pillar in managing the pandemic.

“This recognition is particularly meaningful to me because it shows how a collaborative effort among different stakeholders leads to success in time of crisis and implement solutions for the benefit of the collectivity,” said Santuccione Chadha.

“The prize emphasizes the importance of sex and gender differences in precision medicine and how our pioneering work with the Women’s Brain Project leads to a more inclusive and sustainable healthcare system. Since 2016, we have been working to study the influence of sex and gender differences in mental and brain diseases with novel technology developments to foster diversity in precision medicine. Receiving the Medicina Italia prize during the COVID-19 crisis is a step further in our determination in establishing the first sex and gender precision medicine institute in Switzerland that will radically change the healthcare system,” ended Santuccione Chadha.

In sharing Dr. Santuccione’s wish for the creation of a precision medicine institute – declares the president of the Abruzzo region, Marco Marsilio – we congratulate her on the prestigious and well-deserved recognition received, once again thanking her for the valuable contribution to the creation of the Covid structure in Pescara has provided us in the construction. About the Women Brain’s Project

The Women’s Brain Project (WBP) is an international non-profit organization based in Switzerland. Composed largely of scientists, WBP advocates for and conducts research on sex and gender sensitive precision medicine, from basic science to novel technologies. The organization aims to get a better understanding how men and women’s brains are similar and different, and to stimulate a global social and political discussion on gender and sex determinants of brain and mental health as a gateway to precision medicine. This goes hand in hand with breaking the stigma around brain and mental health and raising awareness around these topics. The WBP team also aims to contribute to the fulfilment of Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing) and 5 (Gender Equality), among others.
The WBP team constantly delivers peer-reviewed scientific papers, organizing and taking part in scientific and policy events, and offering workshops on mental health to a non-scientific public. Its flagship event is the International Forum on Women’s Brain and Mental Health, which takes place every year in Switzerland.
